Up next, as part of our interview series highlighting Global Detroit’s Changemaker Awardees, we are excited to honor Estrella (Star) Crawford, with the Corporate Leadership award at our flagship open-to-the-public fundraising event, Tapestry, in Detroit on November 13. This award recognizes an institution or individual that exhibits inclusive practices or has championed immigrant inclusion in their work.
Star is the Senior Vice President; Market Executive – Detroit, for Bank of America, where she partners with the Market President, cross-line of business leaders, and the Bank of America Foundation to drive market strategy, employee engagement, business integration, and philanthropic investment. Her work supports community and economic development initiatives that respond to critical needs across Michigan. Among other things, she is actively engaged in employee resource groups, serving as an executive sponsor, advisor, and mentor to support the advancement of diverse talent. She also serves on the Board of Directors for SER Metro-Detroit and Alternatives for Girls, two organizations committed to removing barriers and empowering underserved communities.
What role do you believe corporate entities should play in fostering inclusion within their communities?
“Corporate entities play a critical role in ensuring that opportunity is accessible to all. At Bank of America, we believe inclusive growth happens when everyone—regardless of their background—can participate fully in the economy. That means investing in workforce development, supporting small businesses, expanding access to affordable housing, and providing financial education. By widening the circle of opportunity, we strengthen communities and create long-term growth.“
Can you share a personal story of how your work in promoting inclusion has impacted you?
“One of the most meaningful moments for me has been engaging with families through our Better Money Habits financial education programs. Seeing individuals gain confidence in managing their finances and setting a foundation for their children’s future underscores why inclusion matters. It reminds me that when we provide tools and access, we’re not just helping one person—we’re building stronger families and communities.”
What are some specific initiatives or programs your company has implemented to support inclusion?
“Bank of America invests in programs that expand access and remove barriers. Nationally and locally, this includes financing affordable housing, supporting small business owners, and funding workforce readiness programs. We also partner with nonprofits that deliver critical services such as language access, skills training, and credit-building support. These initiatives ensure that everyone has a fair chance to participate and prosper.”
What challenges have you encountered in promoting inclusion, and how have you overcome them?
“One of the challenges in this work is shifting the perception of inclusion from being a separate initiative to being a business imperative. At Bank of America, it’s an integral part of our strategy—whether it’s how we hire and support teammates, serve clients, or invest in communities. We believe it’s the key to responsible growth, to our long-term economic success, and to demonstrate that inclusion benefits everyone.“
How has your background or cultural experience influenced your work?
“As someone of both Puerto Rican and African American heritage, I’ve seen the value of diverse voices and perspectives. My experience helps me understand the importance of ensuring everyone feels seen, heard, and supported. At Bank of America, that perspective shapes the way I lead—focusing on creating access, breaking down barriers, and celebrating the unique strengths people bring. Inclusion isn’t just a value statement; it’s how we unlock opportunity for individuals and drive growth for entire communities.“
Beyond the usual trimmings of good food and great networking opportunities, this year, in spite of the spike in anti-immigration national policy and discord we anticipate a record breaking attendance and a record breaking fundraising goal. We invite you to join us for the celebration and to recognize the efforts of Star and others, of whom model the simple idea that Michigan Prospers with Immigrants.
