As a member of the Global Detroit team, you will have a chance to flex your creative muscles, step outside of what is expected and find new solutions to old problems.

The Communications Intern will gain valuable experience working with the Global Detroit Team and will have the opportunity to support a variety of communications efforts.

Position Overview

The Communications Intern will be assigned specific projects and tasks based on their skills, interests and capacity. The following is a selection of typical assignments that the Communications Intern is likely to receive.

  • Social Media
    • Develop written and/or visual content for social media posts.
    • Post content across all channels (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube).
    • Work individually and with Global Detroit program teams to assemble content for digital and traditional media.
    • Research and test new digital media and content creation tools.
  • Special Communications Project Support
    • Support Communications Director and Manager in day-to-day tasks surrounding current projects.
    • Assist with gathering content at Global Detroit events.
    • Support specific efforts like storytelling, E-newsletter creation, graphic design, website updates, etc.
Learning Outcomes and Benefits

At the beginning of the internship, the Global Detroit Communications Team will work with the Communications Intern to design a work plan for the duration of the internship, identifying specific projects and learning outcomes based on the intern’s skills and career goals.

Potential areas of focus may include:

  • Project management in communications and marketing.
  • Non-profit and fundraising communications.
  • Social media content development and account management.
  • Writing and copyediting.
  • Graphic and digital design.
  • Interviewing and storytelling.

Throughout the course of their internship, Global Detroit interns can expect to:

  • Gain experience and hone skills in a variety of communications disciplines.
  • Create materials that can be included in a professional portfolio.
  • Build relationships and a network with the Global Detroit team.
  • Have opportunities to network within Detroit’s nonprofit sector.
  • Enjoy, and contribute to, a welcoming and positive work environment.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Current or recent student in relevant postsecondary education or training or programs (e.g., English, Communications, Marketing, Graphic Design, etc.). Skills or experience in a related field may be considered in place of formal education or training.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Time management and multi-tasking skills.
  • Proficiency in various social media platforms.
  • Proficient in basic office tools (e.g., Gmail, Google Drive, Microsoft Office, etc.).
Desired Skills and Experience

Technical communications skills preferred, especially in one or more of the following areas:

  • Writing and copyediting.
  • Graphic design.
  • Social media strategy and tools (e.g., content planning and design tools).
  • Interviewing and storytelling.
Duration and Compensation

The duration and wage for this internship will vary based on the candidates’ skills, experience, and availability. The anticipated wage for this internship is $18 to $20 per hour. We expect the internship to include 10 to 25 hours of work per week for 10 to 16 weeks.
