Last in our Spring Giving campaign spotlight series is Western Michigan University graduate Shubi Pawar.

What professional and educational avenues are you currently pursuing? Why? And, what is one personal thing you’d like to share that has impacted your professional or educational path?

I’m currently a Data Systems Analyst in the healthcare sector. I moved into this field after completing my Master’s in Data Science at WMU because I love using data to solve complex, real world problems. Transitioning from my undergraduate background in Civil Engineering to Data Science was a major shift, but it taught me that being adaptable is just as important as being technical.

How have you engaged with Global Detroit to-date? How was this engagement helpful to you personally and/or professionally?

I’ve stayed connected through their workshops, networking events, and the various job search resources they provide. The guidance and community Global Detroit offers were invaluable for understanding the landscape and staying motivated during the visa and job hunt process.

Where’d you grow up? What does a “welcoming community” look like to you in everyday life?

I grew up in Maharashtra, India, before moving to Michigan to further my education. A welcoming community is one where you aren’t just a number or a visa status. It’s a place where people value your contributions and recognize your professional identity, like simply being known as “Shubi” by my colleagues and neighbors.

What do you wish more people knew about immigrants in Michigan?

I wish people realized the level of grit and expertise immigrants bring to the table. Most of us have spent years navigating complex systems just for the chance to work here, and we’re incredibly driven to contribute to the state’s growth and innovation.

Why is it important to support organizations, like Global Detroit, that help immigrant entrepreneurs and professionals succeed?

Navigating a career on a visa can feel like an uphill battle. Organizations like Global Detroit bridge the gap by providing the specific tools and encouragement needed to help talented people get their foot in the door and start making an impact.
