New findings reveal Michigan could lose as much as $416 million in net economic impact and up to $72 million in state and local taxes over the coming decade if refugees slated to come to Michigan in 2025 are unable to do so.

A new advocacy campaign is raising the banner on the critical role that immigration plays in driving Michigan’s population and economic success. With more than 340 signatories, including the Detroit and Grand Rapids Chambers of Commerce, business leaders, local economic development organizations, businesses and concerned individual who understand that immigration is pivotal to Michigan’s economic viability, now and in the future.

Global Detroit released a new impact evaluation of its Global Entrepreneur-in-Residence (Global EIR) program to place foreign-born startup founders at universities to teach and mentor while launching and growing their startup companies. The evaluation documents that Global Detroit has supported twelve immigrant founders from eleven companies who have created 174 jobs and attracted $28.1 million in venture capital investment since entering the program.

A new report, Contributions of New Americans in Michigan, released by the American Immigration Council—in partnership with the Michigan Global Talent Coalition —underscores the crucial role immigrants play in the state’s population growth, labor force, business creation, and consumer spending power.

According to a new “High School Kids in Immigrant Families” study commissioned by Global Detroit, 300,000 Michigan kids live in immigrant families, where at least one person was born outside the U.S. Of these, 70,000 are Michigan high school students — 15% of all Michigan high schoolers.
