Up next as part of our interview series highlighting Global Detroit’s Changemaker Awardees, we are excited to honor Brandon E. Byrd with the Corporate Leadership award at our annual event, Tapestry on November 10. This award recognizes an institution or individual that exhibits inclusive practices or has championed immigrant inclusion in their work.
Brandon E. Byrd, Director of Foreign National Talent Management at Populus Group, has built his career around connecting people with opportunities to succeed. With over 15 years of experience, he brings together clients, talent, workforce programs, community organizations, nonprofits, and universities to ensure the foreign national community is supported while helping employers strengthen their workforce.
Was there a particular moment, person, or experience that made you realize this was the work you wanted to do?
My path to this work was not something I could have scripted, but looking back, there were several people and experiences that guided me here. Service has always been a core value in my family. My father graduated from West Point and dedicated his life to serving others, while my mother spent more than 20 years in education helping students reach their potential. My wife also inspires me through her commitment to volunteering and community involvement.
Throughout my career, I was naturally drawn to recruiting and talent development because of the opportunity to help people achieve life-changing goals. When I began leading the Foreign National Talent Management program at Populus Group, I realized I could combine my passion for talent with a deeper purpose: creating opportunities for individuals from around the world while strengthening our local community and workforce.
How has your professional journey been shaped by your community?
I do not consider myself an entrepreneur in the traditional sense, but my journey has been shaped by a community that believes everyone deserves the opportunity to succeed. At Populus Group, that belief is part of our culture, and it has influenced how I approach both leadership and service.
I have always identified with the underdog and understand the impact that a single opportunity can have on someone’s life. That perspective has led me to focus on mentoring others, supporting community organizations, and creating pathways for foreign nationals and emerging talent to achieve their goals. The community around me has reinforced something I strongly believe: success becomes more meaningful when you are helping others succeed along the way.
How does your work contribute to the vibrancy and growth of the local community?
Populus Group contributes to our community through workforce development, volunteerism, and partnerships that create opportunities for people who might otherwise face barriers to success. Through our work with foreign nationals, military veterans, students, and underserved populations, we help connect talented individuals with meaningful career opportunities. And as a company headquartered in Troy, Michigan, we are proud to employ hundreds of professionals throughout Metro Detroit.
But our connection to the community goes beyond employment. We invest our time and resources in community organizations, educational institutions, and nonprofit partnerships that strengthen the local workforce and create lasting impact.
What keeps you going when the work gets difficult?
My family is my foundation and my source of strength. They keep me grounded and remind me why meaningful work matters. I am also motivated by the individuals and families our team supports daily. Behind every visa application or compliance process is a person pursuing an opportunity, building a career, and often supporting loved ones around the world.
It is easy for this kind of work to look technical from the outside, but there is always a person behind it. Knowing that our work can directly affect someone’s future keeps me focused on delivering the highest level of accuracy, integrity, and care.
What does success mean to you beyond the traditional measures of business success?
For me, success goes far beyond traditional business metrics. It means waking up each day knowing that my work has purpose and positively affects the lives of others. Our team helps people pursue opportunities, build careers, and achieve their own version of the American dream. Knowing that we can make a meaningful difference in someone’s journey is incredibly rewarding. True success is not measured only by growth or results. It is also measured by the lives you help improve along the way.
Global Detroit will honor Brandon E. Byrd and the other 2026 Tapestry Changemaker Awardees at Tapestry on November 10. The annual celebration recognizes individuals and organizations whose leadership demonstrates how immigrant inclusion and global connections strengthen Southeast Michigan.
